Former Real Madrid, AC Milan and Machester City player Robinho has been handed a nine-year jail term for his role in a gang rape at an Italian nightclub in 2013.
The 37-year-old Brazilian-born footballer was accused of raping an Albanian woman in her 20s during her birthday.
That time Robinho was playing for AC Milan. With his friend Richard Falco were found guilty in 2017 and were sentenced in December 2020.
He appealed the sentence at Milan Court of Appeal but the court has upheld last year’s verdict.
Fresh details emerged at the Court of Appeal that Robinho and his representative attempted to deceive investigators by providing different accounts on ‘previously agreed facts’.
The Court of Appeal stated that Robinho ‘belittled’ and ‘brutally humiliated’ the woman.
He was originally convicted using evidence of intercepted phone calls and messages, in which the footballer is alleged to have boasted ‘the woman was completely drunk’.
His lawyers attempted to dismiss the leaked phone calls and messages by claiming they ‘have not been correctly translated into the Italian language.’
The star player has 45 days to lodge a further appeal with the Supreme Court.
