Kikuyu music maestro John De’Mathew was buoyant in his last hours during the fundraiser to assist his musician Peter Kigia’s family.
Kamau Gathigi, his closest friend who he spoke with minutes before he perished in a road accident near Blue Post hotel last night said De’Mathew was jovial as he handed his contributions to Kigia’s family.
After a show in Ruiru on Saturday night, De’Mathew attended the harambee to seek money to help Kigia’s sick child in Metro Bar Thika. He met his death shortly after he left the event driving in his Nissan Navara double-cabin. He was driving alone.
“De’Mathew was very instrumental in the harambee. He had managed to raise lots of money from friends. He surprised us. He contributed lots of money” Gathigi said.
Gathigi revealed that the artist called him shortly after he left and urged him to ensure the unity and friendship of artists is kept alive
“I guess I was the last person he called. He thanked me for organising the fundraiser and told me the President was delighted too” Gathigi said.
Murang’a South police boss Dorothy Gaitenga said he rammed into a slow moving trailer as he headed towards Kenol.
