Passengers travelling from Meru to Nairobi escaped accident narrowly after their driver was shot at by police officer at Kangaru roadblock in Embu.

John Njuki was driving the 14-seater matatu under Meru Shuttle when he was flagged down by three officers but he defied. The cop opened fire, wounded Njuki in the thigh as scared passengers screamed.

The vehicle came to a stop safely. The cops claimed they were informed the vehicle was carrying criminals.

He was taken to Embu Referral Hospital as commuters and residents protested the carelessness of the cop who risked their lives.

It is said the matatu crew had an altercation with Tharaka Nithi county askaris at Chuka town. The askaris called the police claiming the vehicle was carrying armed men, prompting officers to waylay it.

Scared and stranded motorists protesting the act.

County Police Commander Daniel Rukunga said they are looking into the matter to establish who has a case to answer.
