Charles Rubia, the first Mayor of Nairobi has passed on at his Karen Home, aged 96.
He served as Mayor from 1963 to 1967. Then as Starehe MP from 1969 to 1988.
Rubia alongside late politician Kenneth Matiba fought for multi-party democracy and were detained by then President Daniel arap Moi.
His health, like Matiba was affected by the detention and since then Rubia has been ill.
ODM leader Raila Odinga eulogised him saying;
“He paid a great price for his stand and was detained at the height of the struggle but he never wavered. I am proud to have known and worked with him. My condolences go out to his family at this difficult moment and may his soul rest in Eternal Peace.”
