Nairobi county will charge hawkers Sh500 monthly

Law has been passed providing that hawkers in Nairobi will be licensed and will pay monthly or annual fee.

Governor Mike Sonko signed into law The Nairobi City County Trade Licensing Bill that provides that hawkers will Sh500 monthly or Sh7, 000 annually.

Those operating outside the central business district will pay Sh30 every day. And shoe shiners, repairs, newspaper vendors, soda, sweet and cigarettes sellers will be charged Sh2, 500 annually.

Hawker who operate from certain locations and sell their wares from a vehicle will be charged Sh15, 000 every year.

Failure to adhere to this law will lead to a fine of Sh100, 000, six months’ imprisonment or both.
