Some Nairobi County askaris pocketed Sh60, 000 bribe from each of a group of Eastleigh milk vendors they arrested and arraigned in city county court.
Though the said vendors were fined Sh60, 000 which they were ordered to give to some individuals and then ‘charged’ additional Sh2, 000 each to be released from county cells.
Eastleigh North MCA Osman Adow disclosed the issue and said he has evidence on how the extortion was executed.
“These hawkers were arrested and instead of being fined at the courtrooms, they were taken to different rooms and fined Sh60,000 each yet they were selling something worth of Sh1,200” Adow said.
He asked the Assembly Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs to follow up the matter, saying the vendors are ready to submit more evidence.
“The hawkers were still forced by the inspectorate officers to part with Sh2,000 to secure their release from custody while others were neither presented before the court nor informed of the offenses which they had been arrested for but were forced to part with hefty bribes for their release”, Adow claimed.
